What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling in Cornwall

Microneedling, also known as medical needling or collagen induction therapy, is a clinically proven skin rejuvenation technique using sterile needles to kick start a wound healing response. The result - new collagen. It has a wealth of clinical evidence to support its efficacy.

How Microneedling Works …

The term ‘collagen’ is quite a buzz word in the beauty and aesthetics world, and rightly so. Collagen, along with elastin form the ‘scaffolding’ to our skin giving strength, support and elasticity. These strong protein fibres are surrounded by hyaluronic acid - our natural skin plumper and hydrator.

As a result of the ageing process, lifestyle choices and sun damage our collagen and elastin start to break down leading to fine lines, wrinkles, textural issues and larger pores.

We know that any minor injury to the skin causes a healing response, including the formation of new collagen. This is the premise of microneedling.

Microneedling uses a series of fine sterile needles to repeatedly penetrate the layers of skin. This results in the creation of thousands of micro-injuries or ‘microchannels’ in both the upper (epidermis) and lower (dermis) layers which in turn ignites the natural cascade of healing events in the skin. This results in remodelling of the skin over the coming months to include new formation of collagen and elastin.

One important key feature of microneedling is the wound healing process is scarless. This is because the needle depth is controlled by great precision which, through the healing process, stimulates the production of the correct type of collagen.

Micro vs. Cosmetic Needling:

Microneedling is not to be confused with cosmetic needling. Cosmetic needling uses either rollers or stampers which are designed for home use and have a very shallow needle depth. The sole purpose of these is to enhance the penetration of your serums and moisturisers active ingredients.

Mirconeedling FAQ’s

  • A: We apply topical anaesthetic cream for 30 minutes before treatment, making the procedure comfortable for most clients.

As one client said: "I was pleasantly surprised it did not hurt at all" - Olivia, Truro

  • A: Expect pink skin for 2-3 days, though many clients find redness barely lasts 24 hours. You can typically return to normal activities although you may wish to avoid returning to work on the day of treatment and possibly the following day.

  • A: Your skin begins remodelling immediately, but visible improvements develop over weeks and months as new collagen forms. Many clients notice improvements after just one session, with optimal results after a course of treatments.

  • A: Yes! Microneedling is suitable for all skin tones and types and can be performed year-round, unlike some treatments that require avoiding sun exposure.

  • Q: How is this different from at-home derma rollers?

A: Home rollers offer very shallow penetration designed only to help serums absorb. Medical microneedling with SkinPen Precision penetrates at controlled depths to actually stimulate collagen production and skin remodelling - completely different results.

  • A: Nina has 15 years NHS background as an Occupational Therapist with a Master of Science degree in Health Care from Exeter University, plus 20 years experience in the beauty/skincare industry. As a non-medic, she has completed additional training to be certified to purchase and apply prescription-only topical anaesthetic cream. You're welcome to view her SkinPen training certification.

  • A: Absolutely. SkinPen Precision is backed by more than 90 independent validation studies and was the first FDA cleared microneedling device. It's CE marked and proven safe and effective.
